Setting History RightHistorical route: http://www.tracyskarate.com/History/settinghistory.htm Historical reconstruction: This page is stored locally. Where the original copyrighted page is not available for republication, the text is a locally authored reconstruction. Martial-arts history is easy to romanticize. A serious reconstruction separates memory, lineage tradition, dated documents and later interpretation. The problem with oral historyStudents naturally remember their teachers as central figures. Decades later, an instructor’s recollection may be sincere yet differ from another participant’s memory. Kenpo is particularly vulnerable to this problem because its early American growth was fast, decentralized and tied to many independent schools. A practical standard of evidenceFor this reconstruction, a dated certificate is stronger evidence than a later rank list; a period advertisement is stronger than a story about when a school opened; and a contemporary photograph is stronger than an undated caption copied across websites. Lineage narratives remain valuable, but they are labeled as narratives rather than treated as neutral records. Preserving disagreementThe old Tracy site often argued forcefully for its view of Kenpo history. Rather than reproduce those polemics verbatim, this reconstruction preserves the subjects, dates and controversies while giving readers enough context to understand why different branches remember events differently.
