Pasadena turned Kenpo into a visible public school, and the Tracy brothers entered the story during this formative period.

The Pasadena studio

Ed Parker opened a Kenpo school in Pasadena in 1956. The studio became a meeting point for martial artists, servicemen, students and members of the Southern California entertainment community. More importantly, it gave Parker a permanent laboratory for teaching and organizing the art.

The Tracy brothers arrive

Jim Tracy’s published family history says that the brothers walked into Parker’s school in 1957 and enrolled in the beginner course; Tracy-family material also places Al’s sustained training after his Air Force service. They became unusually serious students and later instructors.

Learning the whole teaching operation

The Tracys did not merely learn movements. They observed enrollment, private instruction, group classes, rank progression and how a school could support itself financially. Those operational lessons were as important to the future Tracy organization as technical knowledge.
