Kenpo Karate 1962–1964

The first Tracy school period established the teaching model that would later support a much larger network.
San Francisco
Jim Tracy’s family history describes the brothers choosing San Francisco partly because it offered both higher education and a large enough population to support a karate school. They opened under the name Tracy’s Kenpo Karate School.
From collection to curriculum
Running a school required more than remembering techniques. Material had to be sequenced, students had to know what came next, and instructors needed a consistent standard. The Tracys increasingly organized the system into teachable blocks and rank expectations.
Private instruction as an engine
The Tracy model became strongly associated with private and semi-private lessons. That format made it possible to give students a defined sequence of material while still adapting pace and detail to the individual.
