Kenpo Karate 1960–1962
The early 1960s were a period of rapid change: new forms, new organizational ideas, and the point at which the Tracy brothers prepared to establish their own school.
Cross-pollination
Tracy sources describe Parker and his senior students exploring Chinese forms and training methods during this period. That cross-pollination helped widen the curriculum beyond the earlier self-defense collections and contributed to later disagreements about what should be considered ‘original’ Kenpo.
Black-belt milestones
The Tracy site lists Al and Jim Tracy among Parker’s early Shodan promotions, with certificates dated January 1962. Rank chronology in early Kenpo is often disputed, so this reconstruction presents the Tracy list as a lineage source rather than a universal ranking of seniority.
The break toward independence
By 1962 the brothers were looking toward San Francisco and a school of their own. The transition marks a shift from students within Parker’s organization to organizers who would codify and expand a distinct Tracy curriculum.
