Why Kenpo Technique Names Matter

Technique names are a mnemonic technology. They compress a scenario, rhythm or visual idea into a short phrase that can be recalled under the pressure of a large curriculum.
Names build a mental index
A student who knows hundreds of movements needs a way to retrieve them. A memorable title gives the brain a hook, much like a song title retrieves a melody.
But names can become a trap
If the student only knows the choreography attached to one attack, the name has replaced understanding. Advanced study should identify the underlying principles—angle, check, target, balance and exit—so the movement can adapt.
Historical value
Technique names are also artifacts. Comparing older and newer lists can reveal when material was renamed, split into separate techniques or grouped differently.
